Remembering crew members of F4 LCU HMS Fearless who were sadly killed today 8th June (1982), CSgt Brian Johnson QGM, Sgt Scouse Rotherham, Marines (Sigs) Rundle & Griffin as well as MEA James & LMEM Miller. Gone, but never forgotten, once a Marine, always a Marine.

Dear all, being a bit of a medal spotter , I noticed on your banner the Officer in No1′s was wearing a medal (white, blue, yellow, blue, white stripes). I was wondering what this medal is for as Ive not seen it before.

Update re the name of the troopship. I think perhaps the troopship on which Valentine Burn sailed to Australia in 1944 was The Empress of Scotland, until 1942 called The Empress of Japan. I’ve yet to check this out with Mr B.

If my memory serves me well I believe the troopship he sailed on was the Express of Australia. I understand this was taken from Germany after the war. I sailed on this ship to Malta in 1947, it then went on to the far-east.

My father in law Valentine (Lofty) Burn was a Royal Marine on board the aircraft carrier HMS Furious from 1941 to 1944. He left the Furious in May1944 and sailed on a troopship which he thinks had originally been The Emperor of Japan, hastily renamed The Empress of Canada, for Australia and served there until he was demobbed. He would be interested in hearing from anyone else who remembers the Furious.

Cliff, it’s a topic that often pop’s up on the Once a Marine always a Marine (OAMAAM) web site!. No one has yet explained why (or when?) this relaxation of the dress code (if there’s been a change?) came about?!.

I served in the corps from 1961 to 1973 when it was correct to wear the cap badge over ones left eye, I’ve noticed recently both officers and other ranks with the cap badge worn over the left ear! When did dress code change?

Yes, I would like to join the Royal Marines Association. I am from Plymouth and my father, James Paterson, was (I believe) in 42 Commando around 1965. I would like to know how to trace his service details more accurately. Thank you. Nick Alexander.

Re: message 340 from Frank Case.
Thank you for trying – I am sorry it failed. I did receive other messages from the list so the address is correct.
Could it possibly be the size of the message? The address “l.e.packwood@utwente.nl” is a university address and can handle large messages so it should not be any problem at this end. Maybe a free service like “Dropbox” or Wetransfer” would be better.
Kind regards,
Lynn
